180220 – Structure Progress

From the precedent study; Port of Felixstowe, one of the warehouse zones is with 46, 451 sq.m. of total area. Thus, this figure is used as a guideline for the proposed Domestic and International general warehouses’ areas.

The estimation number of labours involved is 15,000. Thus, the living space requires roughly 11,250 sq.m. The area is divided into 8 blocks with 25-storey each to accommodate 15,000 local and international labours.

ROBERT CRESSWELL // PROGRESS

Following the Cross Critiques questions arose as to the processes of the project. The diagram below shows the processes of customs facilities that:

A. Import good for retail.

B. Import goods for distribution.

C. Export goods for distribution.

In order to successful interrogate these to inform layout, spatial diagrams were initiated. The diagrams below show how the processes could overlap and begin to define interesting moments in which architectural design will become significant. Through this process a single moment of my project articulation became compelling. This moment can be described as the tangent, a single instance in which the processes listed above all interact. In understanding this, a rethinking of the master plan and its Geo-political impact on the surrounding context was strengthened.

RACresswell

The diagram below shows how the tangent will interact and begin to define a new Anaklia. Within the implied radius of the circle I am proposing a new definition of the free industrial zone. This leading on from my work of inflection will allow Anaklia to become the centre of the new development and allow it to be a crucial piece in the regions development.

From working at such a vast scale the next step in the projects development will be to ‘zoom’ and consider the relationship of the tangent in regards to Abkhazia, Anaklia and the new economy of the Free Industrial Zone. The drawings below show the interaction of the commercial facade (foreground), industrial facade (background) and how they envelop the ideologies of the tangent.

Harry// Progress

I have been figuring out the organisational principles for the my programme and project, refining the idea of a linear process of cleaning for the workers from the port, alongside the more lux elements of the leisure complex aimed more at tourists and residents taking leisure time.
Below shows the Spatial arrangement diagram which clearly lays out the arrangment and relation of spaces:
I am attempting to develop this into a coherent plan, as below, which will soon be digitsed to accurately work out the relations between spaces. The organisation follows the ‘shelf’ on the port side, allowing for some view through with the leisure elements opening up onto the beach, promenade and lido with sunset views and back to the port.

Sketch Parti of arrangement along breakwater

Having established that the short section was crucial to develop along the whole length of the building I have started to consider key moments, some more refined than others so far.

Sketch Short sections
Section: Entrance/Port changing room

Precedent Studies:

I found a useful precedent in Sonsbeek Pavilion in Arnhem, Aldo Van Eyck (1966) (http://socks-studio.com/2013/11/18/sonsbeek-pavilion-in-arnhem-aldo-van-eyck-1966/). The channeling of spaces with breaks and mediation between them, framing views and connections between them was an interesting example for subtle relations between separated spaces/flows.

Centreparcs
To explore the microclimates and ‘one-roof’ structures that are unanimous in CenterParc waterparks and central buildings I drew some study sections of the spaces and how other spaces are encapsulated within.

I am developing a promenade map which presents it in a ‘theme park’ manner, highlighting key buildings and spaces along the route, but most importantly as a route in itself of which my building will be the culmination.

DEBBIE // PROGRESS

SPATIAL SEQUENCE DIAGRAM

MODULES OF HABITATION

The aim is to create modules of habitation that can sprawl and interconnect to provide a multi-layered/relational living environment. The curved shape is arrived at to dictate spatial relationships and proximities through inevitably providing a courtyard or atrium in which light can be dispersed into the gardens both naturally and mechanically through heliostats.

SKETCH SECTION

The garden is seen as an essential part of retired living, providing beauty and well-being. Gardens can be experienced in the privacy of every back yard, even as the building rises vertically. There are also semi private gardens in gathering spaces to provide quality social nodes. The module mediates the horizontal plane to create raised multiple ground levels to enable a neighborhood street feel on every floor.

The facade forms an archive of Georgia’s vernacular architecture, and the memory and trace of those that inhabit the facility. 100 years from now, in the context of a hyper intelligent architectural environment, this facility will be the conversation that Georgia and the world has with its past as remnants are preserved and examined.

The occupation of the plan and facade of the unit is open to manipulation to the limit of the grid.

Anaklia

Historical and Political Identity at Urban // Geographical scale

The existing tourist spot, gathering space, buildings, monument didn’t create a successful life and link connection to people, as well as not enhance the geographic of Anaklia.

Gem Fest is one of the key event in the summer for Anaklia. However, is there any events able to reactivate Anaklia, or in winter time? Provide a more stable economic / workforce ? Is there any local human resource we can bring in ? How can the nature elements like the sea, the sun, the moon light, the mountain and other abandoned buildings (mainly the abandoned pier and the building behind) as a existing framework to drive a project to maintain Anaklia? Is there something can redefine the site in regards the orientation and program which provides  connection to both local people and tourists?

How this is exemplified in architectural form

Through the elements study of these Junctions in site, it shown that the spatial experience did not define a clear wayfinding and a meaningful promenade.(etc.from one spot to another spot)

Apart from a official iconic building, different kind of lighting in site become another wayfinding: including both Nature lighting and artificial lighting.

Problem statement

Gem Fest is the biggest event in Anaklia, is there any Events in Georgian Culture reactivates Anaklia?

If people follows light, and Light creates event, event creates movement to Anaklia, how does it work in day / night; work in an annual project for anaklia for rest of the month; and architecturally define the location that bringing life but not given a bad impact to site.

Project

Response to Problem statement in terms of Proposal Aims

Relocate the iconic building / gathering space, Soften / blur the boundary of tourist spot and local residents. Resurrection the abandoned buildings and the cityscape. Place different fragments into the junctions, some on the road, some on the river, some on the sea, some on the beach. Each spatial fragment works with the surrounding building, and give orientation, for the future, it give a reference point for the future program, or suggest activities. Creates different pocket centre points and it become a unconscious boundary for anaklia and future develop.

Specific site chosen

Each junction, become part of spatial sequences and threshold in the site, each junction work with the others, It acts as a ‘becoming space’ (referencing to Tschumi and Derrida Parc le Villette).  ( See and seeing ) being space and becoming space..

Formal // Spatial // Narrative // Rhetorical

Techniques, Methods, Strategies and provocations (programme / form / gesture)

If an iconic building works as a physical object to wayfinding, could a void creates a insensible discovery for the site.

Discovery Anaklia these different time, through the day and night explore the city. Demonstrate a chronograph project in Anaklia. Give Anaklia a new event / new routine.

Ultimate Endeavours

How this relates to site (historical)identity & problem statement?

Spatially:

Through a series of object Redefine the orientation in the site, use nature element to develop a new axis, a insensible wayfinding / junctions as a link to reconnect the site for people(Sun / Mountain / sea / moon? Abandoned building)

This project sets up a guide for any future development / (like a master plan but using time base to order the programs and event)

Socially:

Create 24/7 Events /Flow / port / and tourist / create a new routine for Anaklia.

Politically:

It became a Event city . Activate anaklia.

IQA // MAPPING EXAMPLES

Main layer
colonade / archways / anything like an aqueduct / pier

Banal Layer
vegetation – trees

Elemental Layer
trees and greenery formally/informally

During my site investigation in Anaklia, my prior is to focus and document on the green corridor of the site. Thus, I’ve taken samples of the types of vegetation, encompasses from all types of urban greenspace, ranging from public and private spaces such as domestic gardens, to the open spaces alongside roads and along the promenade.

LOK // DRAWINGS + REFLECTION / PROCESS

As a conceptual and experimental drawing trying understand the life through a cinematic study from Rose revolution Square and Iveria Hotel in Tbilisi. Not only the way of drawings but, we are trying to depict “post soviet life ” in between and the inhibition of public life for vehicle and human.

Individual:

As large, the Individual Drawing shows the unfold and distorted perspective to compare the use of the existing square / road. Furthermore, deconstruct the drawing in different layers. Look into a small scale, Re-framed the drawing into different moments, create a visual storyline montage. The drawings also show the Delay memories / images through the hatches, and each framed view suggesting a sequence of seeing. Each scene able to see some hints of phantom, like the nature, the mountain, the sun, the infrastructure, the signage, the adv, the proportion of street and the light post.

A Night version give a strong atmosphere of how the illumination dominated the street, Lighting as a way of finding.

Combine drawing:

The drawings expressed the dark of under the Rose revolution square. We emphasises the contrast of Refurbish / Ruin. Bright / Dark, Clean / Corrupt, Secure / Dangerous,  Smoothness / Roughness.

Interesting to note, the space under the Rose Revolution Square is denoted by Clubs, a unwelcome entrance for  nightlife. / hiding life.

Further development:

Individual drawings add more detail on “monuments” that can link to each scene.

Time : using sun / moon or other thing to present the change of time

Light : emphasise light and surrounding.
