Through the similar construction of that of the Exquisite Corpse, a paradoxical confrontation between the elements of speech, we have sought the unlikely juxtaposition of unlikely objects and their alliance of disparate worlds in creating an architecture that is both hybrid and in manipulation (doppelgänger).

Using the Iveria Hotel as the skeletal substructure to our drawing, we have created multiple doppelgangers through the manipulation of the Iveria. Both elements are a reflection of the act of pastiche of multiple layers of elements found in our individual drawings.  In this way, this façade continues to create a doppelgänger of its former self but through different perception.

The drawings started as a doppelganger with two different facades, one being the copy of the Batumi Tower and the other, the elements of the old Iveria. However, this technique did not investigate the element of pastiche, even though these two facades do not fit together. Therefore, we combined the copied elements in a random order to create a doppelganger of its former self.

Final Drawing

Corridor become main part of connection in term of transportation, accessibility, connectivity at Georgia. Example It is shows that the river still on going at Anaklia from Black sea but the government of Georgia never trying to stop or any attempt to propose structure that will stop the flowing of river. Conclusion is that Anaklia still need have a river as a “corridor” at the future.

One thing that river at Tbilisi and Batumi still have intact with structure element (such as brick wall material, aqueduct structure, bridge and many more) but in Anaklia more surrounding with vegetation (bushes).  Means that at Anaklia need have technology at the future that can overcome the flooding and at the same time can be part of getaway entrance to enter Anaklia.

Based on this, several developments will be happening at Anaklia such as tourism, hotel, shopping complex (duty tax free) and many more.

To introduce Anaklia became an entrance getaway city at the future, transportation become a focal point to bring easy connectivity between people and the city in term of transportation land, water and air.

As we know that river can be part of transportation since a long time ago. Based on discussion with Harry (the one person in charge in term of contour of river and Black Sea), end of river at Anaklia (the one connected with Black Sea) suddenly became to deep. Its means that Black sea potentially can become deep sea port at the future. End of the sea which is connected with Black Sea also can potentially to create harbour and mini transportation. Its means that river that connected with Black Sea can be part of transportation hub at the future.

Like at Venice, they have water canal transportation which we called Vaporetto Busses to bring people developed their city and bring people to comes to Venice. So, this idea can be used to be part of transportation at Anaklia.

This drawing is combination between exploration of grid based on 3 project that I trying to developed in term of what function of the grid itself. The grid can create a collective memory and feeling by using grid as a references. References of grid can be explore by : –

Parc De La Vilette have a consistent between follies to allow the users not having tired and separated between space to another spaces.

Jewish Murdered Berlin has a unconsistent space between wall to allow people experiences different of feelings and memory.

Parc De La Villette allows user feels lost and direction when experiences that area. This can be solved by differentiate the landscape and material.

At Canaregio Project, Disturbance grid was applied to create a hollow and void area to represent “remembering the past”

Based on three project, the grid itself be part of medium to explore the space in term of width of column, level of surface, height of column and many more to create as a collective memory.

WITH Debbie

This drawing is combination between the element of grid and the concept of the state of exception. A city strip of continuous monuments divides the framework city of the future. The drawing has a plan, section and axonometric of the city strip, which has a series of walled spaces. Each space in the strip holds a memory of the old city. The monuments are made of the arrangement of an element on an erased grid, consistently and randomly. The walls of the strip is an elevated surface accessed via stairs that bring the inhabitants to the present, in view of the future city. The city is an inhabitable framework and dynamic urban form. The frame city is continuously evolving, nothing within the framework is permanent, only a grid and the framework itself is. The inhabitants of the city file through and create the walls and floors within the frames waiting for the city of the future to emerge, without a plan.

This is my first drawing, I use the dome of rotonda, a capsule from the capsule tower, and the column to show the scale variation of modularity.
Individual Drawing First Attempt, One

This one is also my first attempt, in order to show the directionality, I use the Villa Rotonda as a starting point, the columns from Climat de France show the horizontality, and capsules from the Capsule Tower show the verticality.
Individual Drawing First Attempt, Two

This one is my second attempt. In order to show the rhythm of modularity more precisely, I have each element placed according to their directionality and symmetry. The Villa Rotonda in both the centre and the four corners because of it is in a dominant status with openings to four direction. The changeability of the squares shows the changeability of modularity applied in Capsule Tower.
Individual Drawing Second Attempt, One

This one is another interpretation of my second attempt. I changed the squares within squares because circle is more reliable according to the real capsules.
Individual Drawing Second Attempt, Two

This is one of my final drawing. My exploration is to find the rhythm and variation of modularity. I will illustrate some of the key points as follows.
1.The Villa Rotonda is placed in the four corners to express it’s orientation/direction towards its infinite surrounding. It is the base for this drawing to grow infinitely.
2. The columns for Climat de France are placed in squares instead of a rectangle because of square is more resonant with modularity in terms of rhythm.
3. The centre is full of capsules. In the first sight, observer can see there also a symmetry existed, which I obtained from the plan of capsule Tower.
4. The upper left capsules are filled with circle, square, rectangle to resonant with dome (Villa Rotonda), Capsules (Capsule Tower), columns (Climat de France). Also, it is a way to show the changeability and variation of modularity.
5. The shadows of capsules in the lower right show not only the centrality in the middle, but also the changing rhythm of modularity.

This is the other one of my final individual drawing. It is another illustration of my understanding of modularity, also another interpretation of the former drawing.
1. I apply the drawing method of axonometric view drawing. Axonometric view drawing shows not only the rigid pattern of modularity, but also the changing rhythm of modularity.
2. All of the modules are expanding to infinite in their certain ways. This transforming repetition emphasise both the variation and rhythm.
3. Despite its changing pattern, the symmetry still plays a strong role in this drawing.
4. The infinite expansion offers more imagination of essences of modularity.
5. The vertical and horizontal expansion shows the directionality of modularity.

The Site

Anaklia is a frontier land where the east meets west, where possibilities and challenges happening at the same time.

The city used to be residential uses mostly, and currently with the intervention of China, the city starts to transfer to a logistic hub and tourist city. As it can be seen, there are many tourism facilities along the north coastal, also some logistic hubs are planned to built along the sea (Anaklia Magazine, 2016).

Currently, the developments in Anaklia is a bit scattered. The tourism facilities, the transport system, and the planned logistic hubs miss a link between each other, which is a crucial point needed to be addressed. The city is missing a connection point, a centre for all the developments to start/run.

The Project

Thus, a very urgent action needed to be taken in Anaklia is to give the city a centre to link these loose developments. The project will act as a starting button/ foundation for other projects to vitalise.

As it can be seen, the new developments mostly are happening along the coastal because the sea has played a central role in the history of Anaklia. In order to make use of the existing facilities/infrastructures/traffic system and address the central role of the sea, the project is proposed to be built close to the Delta area.

From my tech study, commercial activity can be a strong foundation for other activities(political, social) to happen. Thus, I would like to propose a multifunctional building focus mostly on commerce. The building will be built with the following functions to satisfy the demands in need.

First, The building will be a shopping centre where both local residents and tourists want to gather together. The repetition of modularity of shops can be applied here. Second, The building could also become a tourism destination itself as long as the building design is successful. Third, it could serve as a transfer station between bus and boat (land and sea).  Besides, logistic exhibitions and political activities could also happening here.

This multifunctional artifact will become a central place of Anaklia, where commercial and social activities happening. Also it will become a sparial commuting centre, not only between roads, but also between land and sea.

At Anaklia, my layer that have any connection with river as a corridor element is :

Main Layer : Bridge, Pier, Plinth

Banal Layer : Bushed , Hedges

Elemental Layer : Flood plain

In Anaklia, Georgia, I more collecting data on that 3 layer. Its is because on this 3 layer has related each other with river. Like my main layer in term how people use bridge to go another island by using bridge. Same with abandoned pier that people still leave it as a monument but  the construction stage already stopped since long time ago. It is shows that the river still on going at Anaklia from Black sea but the government never try to stop or any attemp to propose structure that will stop the flowing of river. Means that Anaklia still need have a river as a corridor at the future.

One thing that river at Tbilisi and Batumi still have intact with structure element ( such as brick wall material, aqueduct structure, bridge and many more ) but in Anaklia more sorrounding with vegetation ( bushes ).  Means that at Anaklia need have technology at the future that can overcome the flooding.

As we know that river can be part of transportation since a long time ago. Based on discussion with Harry ( the one person in charge in term of countour of river and Black Sea), end of river at Anaklia ( the one connected with Black Sea ) suddenly became to deep. Its means that Black sea potentially can become deep sea port at the future. End of the sea which is connected with Black Sea also can potentially to create harbour. Its means that river that connected with Black Sea can be part of transportation hub at the future.

Interview with Officer Gary in Tbilisi:

1. The political change started in 2004.

2. The new president, from 2003 – 2012, introduced Transparency concept and thus, Rose Revolution happened.

3. Rose Revolution: All police officers were fired. Militia in Georgia replaced them and made them as crime police officers.

4. Previous officers used to beat the citizens and they were famous with bribery.

5. Officer Gary showed images of buildings including police stations that practice the ‘Transparency’ concept. One of them is Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia

The police station in Tbilisi practices the ‘Transparency” concept better than the police station in Anaklia. This can be concluded with the presence of glazing elements on respective police stations. As for the police station in Tbilisi, the whole envelope of the building is made of glazing element whereas, the police station in Anaklia has the glazing element only on its front facade. Therefore, the usage of Transparency concept for police stations are depending on the glazing elements.

the Police Stations in Georgia are the first buildings to practice Transparency Concept, they are just examples to explore the usage of Transparency Concept that can be applied to public buildings in Georgia.

The public buildings in Anaklia can be improved with a combination of both Post-Soviet and Vernacular Architecture;

Post-Soviet Architecture:
Concept of ‘Transparency’; to reveal the unseen views, to break the visual boundary between different spaces.

Vernacular Architecture:
The glazing element is more honest without depending on internal and external architecture elements.

  1. Site

A. Historical and Political Identity at Urban scale

Anaklia has a potential as a transportation hub due to its strategic location between Asia and Europe. Anaklia is also a part of Silk Road, TRACECA corridor, Baku-Tbilisi-Kars route and Viking transport corridor.

The port infrastructure is since 1960s, during the Soviet time. Anaklia somehow has outdated and backward infrastructure which now is not suitable for port infrastructure.

B. How this is exemplified in architectural form

The function is focused on “Transportation” with objects of “Ports,Harbours, Terminals and Rest stops”.

With its strategic location, the site of Anaklia can be part of Sea Freight trade routes along Black Sea for shipping services. Not just that, but the site can be a circulation of commodities between the local and other European and Asian countries.

The future project is highly advised to be in between of the border of the Black Sea and nearest railway.

C. Problem Statement

The port infrastructure in Anaklia is outdated which make it impossible to keep up with other current port infrastructures.

Anaklia currently has lack of economic interaction with other countries which lead to the high percentage of unemployed citizens.

2. Project

A. Response to Problem Statement in terms of Proposal Aims

With its lack of economic interaction, I would like to propose a project that combines the deep sea port with train station and a rest stop.

The port will provide deep sea accessibility for ships and as a focal point in shipping business. The rest stop is mainly focused on the labours as this project creates a hybrid space for working and living.

This proposal also with updated logistic technology that might creates the site as a Smart City.

B. Specific site chosen

The site is in between of the future port and the future railway.

C. Techniques

As Poti seaport is the nearest to Anakali,  the history and the logistic of it should be studied and investigated to further on the port project in Anaklia.

The information gathered from Poti seaport should be adapted to Anaklia. The port in Anaklia can act as a back up port and a doppelgänger of Poti seaport.

Poti seaport:

  • 15 berths, 8-11m draft
  • Container(325k TEU) oil products (2 mln.t) / bulk (6.8 mln. t/year)
  • APM terminals
  • New ICT

Poti seaport is more of a cargo port and it is never designed as a container terminal because it is just a feeder vessel.

D. Ultimate Endeavours

This proposed project will lead to economic & infrastructure growth with its function as a container terminal that connects with the railway for logistic of commodities purposes.

Besides that, the project will eventually becomes a new form of Entrepôt in Georgia. The site itself has the possibility to be a supply chain city with hyper local and hyper global goods.

The project is functioning simultaneously as a working and living space. This somehow creates more job opportunities and better living lifestyle for the labours/workers.

Conclusion (Prologue + Articulation)

The project of living/working and rest area space is an interaction &  midpoint of land and water transportation, creates “Transparency” in political, economical and social aspects in the logistic of the port & railway infrastructure.

As the project is also labours orientated, this will create satisfied and happy workers. Open space is also plays a role in the Transparency concept to ensure the working space is comfortable and to avoid unseen views.

The usage of Transparency concept of this project; A visible presence in urban space & society, recreate domestic space; allow people to live together with shared facilities but yet a place of solitude.

Sketches on plan and section
First Reinterpretation

Second Reinterpretation

These reinterpretation drawings above are the architectural acts of barriers of human movement in Kutaisi Airport, Georgia. As can be seen in plan and section development drawings, human movements are naturally created by the barriers of the airports. These drawings also shows the transition of spaces with different experiences and situations, e.g. check-in booth, waiting lounge, duty free etc.

The building is also made with glass envelope, this is to give a comfort feeling for the occupiers/travellers to move around the building and to reveal the unseen views of the airport internally and externally. This explanation is the use of the Transparency concept.

These drawings are drawn in a sequence of travellers going through barriers of movement.

The second reinterpretation drawing is finalised by adding see-through and reflection elements for transparency on the glass envelope.

Final Reinterpretation

The final reinterpretation drawing is a combination of isometric and oblique drawings. The isometric drawing shows the flow of human movement throughout the barriers and the oblique drawing shows the series of human movement’s barriers.

Projective view

This projective view drawing conveys the meeting point between the two reinterpretation drawing agendas.

From the act of destroying a typical plan grid system and its external carcase like the Alumni memorial hall as an example, architectural elements e.g. the i-beams are free to repeat and extend infinitely. In correlation with this, these beams also figuratively symbolise the idea of infinite time and the i-columns represent events or challenges (acting as infinite barriers) in the lives of the individual hatched columns (representing people). However, these barriers can be avoided depending on the route so they force the movement thus creating a series of spaces. In order to show transparency, shadows are used on opaque elements such as the i-beams and reflections of other elements are represented in the transparent corridor walls and floor. The walls are infinite to symbolise the endless process of mass production and the entire drawing is read as a one-point perspective with a linear arrangement so that the themes of time and infinite structure take a significant role.

The group of Maria, Aqilah, Jude and myself, mapped the residential, industrial and commercial buildings including those partly demolished, abandoned and new builds under construction. Thus, the mapping examples are more focused on the style of buildings in a map.

The map above shows the buildings in white colour with perimeter of the buildings as their shapes on the map. Other elements are with colours respectively to differentiate themselves.  As other elements are coloured, the buildings somehow seems more prominent on the map.

The style of the map above is similar to oblique and isometric drawings.  The buildings are in 3D shapes whereas other elements are in 2D shapes (elevation). The base of the map is flat but the elements of the map are either oblique or in elevation views. This makes the map very interesting.

This map above is similar with the previous example but the buildings are more detailed with line drawings.
