AZUAN // VERB MODEL

ALTEERATION 1 // SEPARATE
verb
/ˈsɛpəreɪt/
divide into constituent or distinct elements.
ALTERATION 1 // CONNECT
verb
/kəˈnɛkt/
bring together or into contact so that a real or notional link is established.
VERB MODEL
Taking from my project articulation two verbs, SEPARATE AND CONNECT synonym with accessibility. I trying to produce series of separated block and makes a series of void to create a series of  island area and to create a distance between block. At the same time i bring element accessibility which is line to bring them back together. Based on this verb model, the line can be act as a connectivity / accessibility between two or three separated spaces.

AZUAN // CROS CRIT

As we know that they have a stress / love-hate relationship between Georgia and Abkhazia in term of political issues and border issue. Abkhazia state already construct steel wall and use that as a border between this two state. Based on political information that, that steel wall becomes a physical border. At the same time, in term of nature resources border was highlight by the river itself – Enguri River. This river becomes nature resources border and share the natures resources together.

Upcoming project for this semeter will be how to reduce the tension between this two state. By using a nature resources as a catalyst, the river can be use as a platform to connect between this two state together. Water Purification Centre will be proposed between the island in this river in hope that they can share the nature resources and clean water together at the future.

MUHAMMAD AZUAN // PROJECT ARTICULATION – PROLOGUE

PROLOGUE

Corridor become main part of connection in term of transportation, accessibility, connectivity at Georgia. Example It is shows that the river still on going at Anaklia from Black sea but the government of Georgia never trying to stop or any attempt to propose structure that will stop the flowing of river. Conclusion is that Anaklia still need have a river as a “corridor” at the future.

One thing that river at Tbilisi and Batumi still have intact with structure element (such as brick wall material, aqueduct structure, bridge and many more) but in Anaklia more surrounding with vegetation (bushes).  Means that at Anaklia need have technology at the future that can overcome the flooding and at the same time can be part of getaway entrance to enter Anaklia.

PROJECT ARTICULATION

Based on this, several developments will be happening at Anaklia such as tourism, hotel, shopping complex (duty tax free) and many more.

To introduce Anaklia became an entrance getaway city at the future, transportation become a focal point to bring easy connectivity between people and the city in term of transportation land, water and air.

As we know that river can be part of transportation since a long time ago. Based on discussion with Harry (the one person in charge in term of contour of river and Black Sea), end of river at Anaklia (the one connected with Black Sea) suddenly became to deep. Its means that Black sea potentially can become deep sea port at the future. End of the sea which is connected with Black Sea also can potentially to create harbour and mini transportation. Its means that river that connected with Black Sea can be part of transportation hub at the future.

Like at Venice, they have water canal transportation which we called Vaporetto Busses to bring people developed their city and bring people to comes to Venice. So, this idea can be used to be part of transportation at Anaklia.

INTERPRETATION DRAWING // GRID AS A COLLECTIVE MEMORY

This drawing is combination between exploration of grid based on 3 project that I trying to developed in term of what function of the grid itself. The grid can create a collective memory and feeling by using grid as a references. References of grid can be explore by : –

1 ) CONSISTENT GRID

Parc De La Vilette have a consistent between follies to allow the users not having tired and separated between space to another spaces.

2)UNCONSISTENT GRID

Jewish Murdered Berlin has a unconsistent space between wall to allow people experiences different of feelings and memory.

3)RANDOMLY GRID

Parc De La Villette allows user feels lost and direction when experiences that area. This can be solved by differentiate the landscape and material.

4)DISTURBANCE GRID

At Canaregio Project, Disturbance grid was applied to create a hollow and void area to represent “remembering the past”

Based on three project, the grid itself be part of medium to explore the space in term of width of column, level of surface, height of column and many more to create as a collective memory.

PROJECTIVE DRAWING // CONTINOUS MONUMENT IN THE FUTURE CITY

WITH Debbie

This drawing is combination between the element of grid and the concept of the state of exception. A city strip of continuous monuments divides the framework city of the future. The drawing has a plan, section and axonometric of the city strip, which has a series of walled spaces. Each space in the strip holds a memory of the old city. The monuments are made of the arrangement of an element on an erased grid, consistently and randomly. The walls of the strip is an elevated surface accessed via stairs that bring the inhabitants to the present, in view of the future city. The city is an inhabitable framework and dynamic urban form. The frame city is continuously evolving, nothing within the framework is permanent, only a grid and the framework itself is. The inhabitants of the city file through and create the walls and floors within the frames waiting for the city of the future to emerge, without a plan.

MUHAMMAD AZUAN // MAPPING EXAMPLE

At Anaklia, my layer that have any connection with river as a corridor element is :

Main Layer : Bridge, Pier, Plinth

Banal Layer : Bushed , Hedges

Elemental Layer : Flood plain

In Anaklia, Georgia, I more collecting data on that 3 layer. Its is because on this 3 layer has related each other with river. Like my main layer in term how people use bridge to go another island by using bridge. Same with abandoned pier that people still leave it as a monument but  the construction stage already stopped since long time ago. It is shows that the river still on going at Anaklia from Black sea but the government never try to stop or any attemp to propose structure that will stop the flowing of river. Means that Anaklia still need have a river as a corridor at the future.

One thing that river at Tbilisi and Batumi still have intact with structure element ( such as brick wall material, aqueduct structure, bridge and many more ) but in Anaklia more sorrounding with vegetation ( bushes ).  Means that at Anaklia need have technology at the future that can overcome the flooding.

AZUAN AND DEBBIE // WEEK 5 – SUMMARY

// exploration of grid without “disturbance of grid” //

// AZUAN//

After receiving a several a comments and feedback, another approach applied which is how to treat a plane surface as a void. Means that all the surface became void area and all the column are protruding up to became a new surface. This ideology still using the three of approach by three project up by using of three element which is consistency of grid, disturbance of grid ( void ) and randomly grid.

This drawing shows that combination of three element (above) how to create a a historical monument. Based on this oblique drawing, its clearly shows that consistency grid of column which is have new disjunction to create new experiences, the surface became a void area and randomly space between another columns shows that’s 3 type of monument and collective memory.

// “Frame City” Strip – State of exception within the city walls //

// DEBBIE //

The drawing examines the architectural act of border walls; that is a continuous physical boundary on an urban scale, and explores the state of exception through an opposing urban environment, in this case the skyscraper city of competing standalone buildings. The exception created is a habitable framework city in the strip between the city walls, a concept from Yona Friedman’s Ville Spartialle.

The idea of creating a state of exception within two walls is taken from Exodus by Rem Koolhaas et al. The drawing also explores the city wall and the relationships contrived from the exististence of a wall, and a study of openings within the wall, and what meaning they imbue and perceptions they produce. This is read through movement and positioning of bodies either side of the walls and within them.

COMBINATION DRAWING :

This drawing is combination between the element of grid and element of space frame. By using Peter Eiseman approach shows that the excavated space (void) represent the past (void represent remembering the past ) and series of column between consistent of grid and randomly grid was apply at the surface of this drawing.

AZUAN // WEEK – 4 SUMMARY

// exploration of grid with “disturbance of grid” //

By using the three of approach by three project, new idealogy of drawing was raised up by using of three element which is consistency of grid, disturbance of grid ( void ) and randomly grid.

This drawing shows that combination of three element (above ) how to create a a historical monument. Based on this oblique drawing, its clearly shows that consistency grid of column, excavation of plane surface and randomly space between another columns shows that’s 3 type of monument and collective memory.

AZUAN // WEEK 3 – SUMMARY

Based on this week, I use a grid as a medium of exploration to create a several of type of monument. Several architect and project was used as references to learn how they use/explore grid to create a certain of space. Example of this project is:

Parc De La Villete by Bernd Tschumi

In this project, grid was used to create a follies which is point of interest and activities for users. Grid was important part and static movement for this project because want to create same/consistent experiences towards users.

Cannaregio Project by Peter Eisenman

Different on this project, Peter Eisenmen create a series of void at Venice to represent of remembering the past of element monument. This is because to create a disturbance of grid in term of verticality ( solid ground and excavated void ) to create series of monument.

Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe by Peter Eisenman

On this project, Peter Eisenman create random grid between column to another column because he believes that random grid can create different memory and feelings rather than static grid. Peter Eisenman loves to create disturbance element of grid to create new disjunction / experiences towards users.

AZUAN // PALIMSEST ARCHITECTURE AS A LAYERING OF SPACE

The concept of palimsest is not a new idea within the architectural discourse. The word “palimsest” comes from the latin “palimsetus” that means “scraped again”. Architect such as Peter Eisenman , Bernard Tschumi and Rem Koolhass use “palimsest” as a metaphor to describe a building that  is written over, partially erased then written over again, each rewritng leaving traces behind. This suggest that buildings features multiple layer that preserve parts of its history. It is through interpretation and understanding of these traces that depth and meaning in architecture prevail. Palimsest suggest a process of transformation through time and this phenomenan that is constantly occuring around us at times leaves traces of material behind. The use of palimsest suggest that buildings are either used , altered and adapted new function. What remains are traces left behind  a palimsest that can be read to reveal the past. One example that we can follow as a references by using Palimses is Parc De La Villet by Bernd Tschumi and Peter Eisenman. Since 1980, Eisenman has been fascinated by the idea of revealing the traces that are left behind, the palimsest and by revealing the relationship between layers. They believes that palimsest aproach was too abstract when designing. The he decided instead of using palimsest as a method, he decide to overlap different system such as point, lines and surfaces to respond to the existing context.

At abstract level, there is a palimsetous altitude in the design where th points, lines and surfaces are layer over each other to create new relationship with the exisitng landscape. Eisenman and Tshcumi stress that the importance of palimsest during design process. They seek to establish a narrative palimsest that already exist on a site. They understand that although a building site is never cleans slate, the relationship between layer doest not necessary need to influence design, however it should allow for patterns to emerge  that are specific to the space.
